Quit Smoking : Three things to help you Quit smoking
Three things to help you Quit smoking
We have all tried to quit smoking at some point in our life. Some of us have tried to quit cold turkey, while others have used one or more of the numerous products for sale. You may have even tried the hypnotherapy or laser methods to help you kick your habit. For some of us these methods help, others end up quitting these and going back to the cigarettes. There is a saying that I have heard on TV and Radio and it goes something like this “Do not quit, quitting”. This is very true and unfortunately very sad, for many of us that have fallen to the addictions of nicotine. Well I am going to share with you three things I have done to help me to kick the habit.
The first thing I did when I began to quit smoking was to get my family behind me. Now I am not talking about those family members that live outside your house. Your house should be a smoke free zone while you are kicking your habit. My wife smoked for a few months and then she quit. This one was really easy for me, as my house was going to be smoke free, as soon as I put the cigarettes and lighter away. I just needed her help and that of my kids to remind me why I was quitting.
The second thing I did was to remove all smoking essentials from the house. These are the ashtrays, lighters, alcohol, and the smokes. I also cleaned the walls, curtains from the smoke residue and used Febreze to freshen the air. This made it so I wouldn’t see or smell the cigarette smoke. There by making it easier to deal with the cravings that was sure to follow. The first three days are the hardest and that is where on of the many nicotine drugs can come in to help ease that time.
The third thing I did was to find something to keep my hands busy. You might think this is a crazy idea but if you really think about it, this makes sense. You spend all these years putting your hand to your mouth. That is a habit that is physical and comforting to us. We associate cigarettes with moods and use them as a calming mechanism. By this means we have developed another habit within a habit. We get addicted to the nicotine and then we get addicted to the motion of putting our hand to our mouth all day long. I smoked 45-50 cigarettes a day before I finally quit. Figure if I put my hand to my mouth 10 times for each smoke that is 450-500 action each and every day. I had to find something to take that place and I found mine in playing with my kids more, which the absolutely loved. You will and should find yours.
It took me many years to finally kick the habit and I am happy that I have done so. I wish you luck with your addiction and if you finally kick the habit, I would love to hear about your story on how you did it.
